Shiva Nata, Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra

Welcome to an exploration of Shiva Nata (Dance of Shiva), an ancient yogic system of conscious control and liberation. Systematised in a logical and modern way by Andrey Lappa, this practice involves synchronised movements of arms and legs. As the movements become increasingly complex, we are challenged to develop increasing conscious control and coordination of the body, breaking down old patterns of the brain that no longer serve us and create new patterns that have physical, mental and energetic benefits.

From this place of intense concentration, we will work our way down through asana (physical postures) and pranayama (breathing techniques). Yin Yoga is a beautiful practice that uses breath, the body's own weight and gravity to go deep within, challenging the limits we have set for ourselves. In terms of asana, it involves sweet long holds that reach connective tissue. In terms of the mind, it means finding the stillness within the pose while continuing to surrender. In terms of energy, it works with meridiens that influence the activity of various internal organs and systems.

Then we wind down using a practice called Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep). While the physical body enters a state of deep relaxation, the mind continues to be awake and aware, creating a unique and powerful state of consciousness that can be used beneficially.

About the teacher:

Kanya was born and brought up in the beautiful Southern Indian state of Kerala. She learned the first steps of yoga from her grandfather who was a student of Swami Sivananda Saraswati and lifelong practitioner of yoga. Trained as an architectural engineer, Kanya had an interesting career path in programming, communication and information design in IT and investment banking. Life changes and an amorphous need to go deeper brought her to yoga again as an adult. Yogananda Paramahamsa’s Autobiography of a Yogi and the masterful Bihar School books inspired her, and practice brought about awareness, understanding and healing. After a transformational training with Andrey Lappa in 2008, it became clear that this is the path she should follow.  She has over 300 hours of teacher training, a 200hr Yoga Alliance certification in Universal Yoga and Shiva Nata, and many additional hours of training in various styles of yoga from reputed practitioners. She has learned Vipassana meditation in the tradition of SN Goenka and continues to deepen her learning of Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism in the Himalayas. Her classes start with good intention, have a strong basis in anatomy and alignment and use asana (physical poses), pranayama (breathing techniques), mudra (energetic configurations), bandha (energetic seals), mantra (sound vibrations), yoga nidra (yogic sleep), meditation and the radical Shiva Nata practice. Since 2009 she has been learning shamanism, guided by traditional wisdom-keepers from Amazonian (Shipibo and Kichwa) and Andean traditions. She incorporates this learning into her practice and infuses her classes with shamanic methods to create positive change in and provide a beautiful experience for the students. In May 2010, she founded the Mind’s Eye project in Singapore, a non-profit, helping people who are visually-impaired (some blind from birth or with additional disabilities) work with body, mind and spirit through yoga. She hopes to continue learning, growing and helping others through life as sadhana, as yoga. She is deeply grateful to all her teachers and her friends and fellow travellers on the path. She dedicates her practice to experiencing the truth of being, and in the meantime, treading softly. Kanya's website: www.alarmelyoga.com. Kanya will be assisted by Martin Duriš.
