About the teacher:
James Boag spent most of his time since teaching in Prague last year in Bangkok and Mysore. During four and a half months in Mysore over the winter, James enjoyed leading lots of kirtan and teaching courses on Bhagavad Gita and Yoga Sutras to international students of Mysore's many renowned asana teachers. In Bangkok, he has taught similar courses at Yoga Elements Studio and at Chulalongkorn University. This teaching work inspires and is nourished by James' own continuing Sanskrit studies which he is pursuing with his Indian teachers, Acaryas whose family have been teaching Sanskrit and the traditional systems of Indian knowledge for over 700 years.
From its roots in the Shankaracarya Vedic tradition and the school of Kashmir Shaivism, James' study and teaching of yoga have continued to grow since he completed teacher training at Yoga Elements Studio in Bangkok back in 2004. After beginning study of Sanskrit at Chulalongkorn University when he was teaching English there in 2006, over the last two years, James has spent about half his time in Mysore and the other half teaching in Europe and Bangkok. James' devotion and study also inform his unique asana classes which draw on many influences including astanga-vinyasa, iyengar, universal yoga, and the approach and insight of Paddy McGrath.

What we studied in the previous three months:
The first part of the course includes an introduction to the Gita and to recitation and some basics of theory of sound and recitation in Sanskrit. It also places the Gita in the context of the Mahabharata epic and how the teaching relates to our lives. This part of the course will elaborate some of the important symbolism of the opening chapter which is very relevant for the exposition of the Gita as a text that is about our lives, as much as Arjuna's situation on the battefield in the Mahabharata. The second and third part of the course we will study the original text in depth, looking at every verse, and learning and practising to recite the beautiful verses in Sanskrit. Chapter 2 is regarded as the very essence of the whole Gita and as such the essence of the Vedas.
